Summary: Is there a crisis in creativity that is related to the crisis in social and mental activity under the influence of mainstream culture and lifestyle in the current version of the ruptured society and its hegemony crisis. In 2010, a Newsweek article raised a concern that there was a “creativity crisis” evident in American children’s lower average scores on tests of divergent thinking. Subsequently, this trend has been questioned; and we can further question the extent to which tests of divergent thinking assess creativity. Our Guest Speaker will be considering creativity as a sociohistorical process and as a larger crisis in mind and in society that includes dialectical thinking (i.e., the ability to reconcile contradictory perspectives).
