Guest Speaker: Jack Zipes, Professor Emeritus of German and Comparative Literature at the University of Minnesota
Summary: In a world exhausted by war, famine, climate devastation, and political strife, have fairy tales become obsolete? In his newly published book, Jack Zipes argues that fairy tales are still relevant as portrayals of the common man/woman speaking truth to power. In the guise of alternate realities where magic is commonplace, a novice is beset with a seemingly impossible task that tests his/her character and wits. By helping us step back from the mundane turmoil of the world we live in, fairy tales can help us envision new possibilities in impossible situations.
