Summary: Children attending the Tools of the Mind preschool and kindergarten programs have shown increased motivation, cognitive functioning, and academic achievement. One of the educational activities in the Tools program is the use of guided pretend play to assist child-initiated play in furthering self-regulation. According to Vygotsky, self-regulation is a pre-requisite for the development of all Higher Psychological Functions including focused attention, emotional regulation, thinking in concepts, imagination, and will (self-motivation).

Mike’s other suggestion was that we collaborate on a multi-media article that could be posted on the CP website. An example is the multi-media article that
Tara Ratnum had posted in Jan 2024 following her presentation in Nov 2023.
Mike Cole suggested another session on this topic. Elena and Deborah have more videos clips of the nuanced dynamic of adult intervention in child initiated play.
And the use of object substitutions in pretend play.
