I am a retired professor interested in cultural-historical approaches to the study of human development, particularly the role of formal education in intellectual development. I pursue these interests in two major lines of work-- designed-based educational interventions and a theory of ontogeny within an evolutionary framework. As founder of the Laboratory of Comparative Human Cognition all of this work is carried out within an ethical framework that focuses on the societal sources of human inequality and the development of new ways to re-mediate the wrongs created by current institutional practices.
