I am Distinguished Professor in the Education Department at the University of California, Santa Cruz. My research is in Mathematics Education; I use a socio-cultural approach and an ethnographic perspective to study mathematics learning and mathematical discourse. My publications have documented the strengths bilingual Latine learners use during classroom mathematical discussions and contradict deficit views of these students. I am originally from Argentina and came to the U.S. at age 14; Spanish is my first language.
