Summary of the presentation: The Alternative Uses Test (AUT) evaluates the participants’ ability to mentally generate many novel uses for common objects. In this talk, we use the cultural-historical approach to trace the developmental roots of the ability to generate new action possibilities using familiar objects and discuss how this ability grows out of children’s pretend play. A tentative model of response generation in the AUT is presented.
