The HOW of Performance Activism

May 6 & 7

An interactive weekend of tools for new and experienced play and performance activists

Hi!

We’re certainly living in some wild times. Always confusing, often disturbing, and sometimes inspiring! As the Leader of Education and Research at the East Side Institute, I feel committed to making sure people have what they need to be as “wild” on the side of development, diversity, and love as others seem willing to be for hate and divisiveness. I am inviting you to join me and other Institute faculty for a weekend that bolsters our ability to engage our crazy world.

The How of Performance Activism is a full interactive weekend of methodological and practical tools for new and experienced play and performance activists. And these tools have the added benefit that they can transform your entire toolbox! I hope you will join us.

Carrie Lobman, Ed.D.

Leader, Education and Research

Spend a weekend with ESI director Lois Holzman & the Institute faculty, exploring conceptions and practical tools of performance activism
East Side Institute Team

Let’s explore how to…

  • approach your activism as a performance and your play and performances as activism
  • create supportive ensembles in all sorts of social, political, artistic and educational environments that generate individual and collective development
  • get past arguing, agitating and aggravation and create conversations that build bridges
  • learn from your project’s successes and failures, and avoid becoming satisfied and stagnating
  • generate happiness and use it as a force for social change
  • navigate and engage established institutions while maintaining your independence

Activism has many connotations; a primary one being activism for something, or against something. What if creating social change in the challenging, confusing and unstable times we’re in requires something different from fighting “for and/or against?”  At the East Side Institute, we feel that asking HOW to create hope, possibility, development is what activists should explore. HOW to talk with one another. HOW to create with our differences. HOW to engage the cultural, epistemological, societal biases that govern the way we use language, the way we make change, and more. Over several decades, we have created social therapeutics – a method of human/community development and social change that combines play, performance and philosophizing. This HOW method is now practiced by thousands around the world in a new movement for social transformation–performance activism.  Join us for a weekend dive into the conceptions and practical tools of social therapeutics and performance activism. We will explore how play and performance can break through social barriers, unleash imaginations, and open doors to new possibilities. See how these discoveries can work for you, your teams, communities and projects. Perfect for experienced organizers and newly becoming activists. Led by a dynamic, diverse and experienced team of Institute faculty: educators, therapists, theater artists, social entrepreneurs–activists all!
